About

Sowmya was introduced to Carnatic music at an early age by her mother, Dr. Revathy Subramanian, who holds a Ph.D. in music. She then learned for a brief period from Smt. Seetha Rajan, and from the age of 15 she has been under the tutelage of the renowned guru Sangeeta Choodamani, the late Smt. Suguna Purushothaman.

Sowmya has won many prizes in competitions conducted by Chennai's prestigious music sabhas, including the Music Academy and Indian Fine Arts. She has performed on All India Radio, Chennai, and in local sabhas, and was regularly featured with her guru in thematic concerts and lecture demonstrations during Chennai's famed December music festival, including Indian Fine Arts, Music Academy, Nada Inbam and Krishna Gana Sabha.

She has completed the Vidwat level exams conducted by the Tamil Nadu Government in Carnatic music theory, and has also undergone voice culture training with the ethnomusicologist Dr. S.A.K. Durga, completing a certificate course at the Institute of Voxology, Chennai.

An MBA graduate from India, Sowmya moved to the Bay Area in 2008 and has since performed at venues including S R Fine Arts, Bay Area Margazhi Festival, Sangati Center, Sangeetha Dhwani, Swaralahari (TV), Livermore Temple, Concord Temple, SV Lotus and Sri Rajarajeswari Temple for Mahasivaratri.

A dedicated and passionate teacher, Sowmya teaches Carnatic music in the Bay Area and online. She believes in strict adherence to aesthetics and padantharam, the original learning as taught by her gurus, and aims for it to be retained flawlessly.
